Description

Made by Thames at the invitation of UNICEF (the United Nations Children’s Fund), as part of a series of worldwide events to mark its fortieth anniversary year. The title sums up the programme’s that each child born into our world is a new unifying theme member of a global community and that, taken together, the world’s children are its greatest natural resource. They have rights, as defined in a UN declaration, that include health care, education, freedom from exploitation. These rights, however, are constantly at risk from a wide range of causes, natural and man-made, across the world. “‘To us a child’ builds a picture of the problem and work of UNICEF through a series of short stories about eight individual children and their families. It visits countries in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America where children suffer, vividly demonstrating how and why UNICEF is so important. The film also tells something of the dramatic history of UNICEF and its work in responding to emergencies since its birth out of the devastation of the Second World War, forty years ago.
