Description
Filmed in Ethiopia over a three year period (from 1983-86) is a unique chronicle of how environmental destruction and mismanaged aid pushed a village and its people to the edge of extinction. It focuses on the village of Ansetta in the Central Highlands of Ethiopia, some 500 km north of Addis Ababa. There the once proud and self-sufficient villagers are seen receiving aid – their resistance so lowered financially and physically through poor crops and bad weather that they have nothing in reserve to fight off any further misfortune. In 1984 drought yet again halved the crop yields, before a further disaster struck. A plague of army worm wiped out what remained, forcing many of the people to abandon their homes and more fertile territory. Useful study of the causes behind famine.
