Description

Every spring in the north of Canada over 100,000 young Harp Seals are killed in the name of FASHION. For the first few months of life their fur is white, which makes them secially valuable for making fur coats for people, specially for women. Greenpeace Foundation has been trying to stop the slaughter for luxury trade, but they are harassed by the Canadian Government which rushed through Parliament a new law called (don’t laugh) ‘The Seal Protection Act’ which among other things, forbids the spraying of seal pups with green dye (which would render them useless for the luxury fur trade). The film made by Michael Checnik, closely observes the work of Greenpeace Foundation and also gives a history of sealing trade as well as reporting the opinons of the both for and against.

This film made in 1980 reflects the cultural, political attitudes and language of the time it was made. The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. This should not diminish its value as a historic record.
