Description

Recommended for ages 12 – adult. Crisp cinematography captures the myriad of activities and perspicacious comments of juvenile residents of the war-torn countries of Guetemala and El-Salvador. Concerned about the effects of war on children of Central America, film maker Patricia Goudvis sought to record their reactions and survival skills. Youngsters show how they make bracelets, blow bubbles, carry weapons, return pop bottles, and search for missing parents. Not only do they share their intimate wishes for future birthdays and eventual mates, but the young people also are seen struggling to come to terms with the deaths of their fathers, who are guerilla soldiers. One teen attends the exhumation of a parent’s grave, and another recalls hiding in a tree during a raid when relatives were killed. Describing fear of current conflicts as well as hope for more settled future, this moving presentation, also available in Spanish, conveys a deep appreciation of social peace and justice as well as of family, education, and friendship. – Nancy McCray

The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. But the issues raised are timeless.
