Description

Eduardo Galeano, Uruguayan poet, describes what it feels like to live in exile in Argentina, his works banned and his associates murdered by authorities. His sensitivty and humour make it a moving experience. At this time, Argentina was more liberal than Uruguay but facing terrible economic problems but both countries had known torture, disappearnaces, official killing and rigid censorship. The perpetrators are still free. His publisher recounts how he tore up thousands of books, including works by Freud and Marx, with his bare hands, to avoid prosecution. These were sold to make paper napkins! The film ends with Eduardo Galeano’s courageous decision to return to this country in spite of the dangers. partly subtitled in Spanish.

The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards but is useful for historical use.
