Description

Emancipation of women in Sub-Saharan Africa is rather different from in the west. The film follows several such women, who have rejected the idea of love and the couple as the basis of family life. These women have children, but the man responsible for them is the uncle, and they are cared for but by an extended family. The women are intelligent and sophisticated, and they accepted many Western values, but prefer to live in some respects according to older traditions, ingeniously combining elements of both cultures to cope with the necessities of life in a market economy. Clear commentary and excellent photograph make this a fascinaing study of another culture. Part of a series called “Africa: The transitional society”.
