Description

In a poor suburb on the outskirts of the capital of Cape Verde, where one standpipe serves 3,000 people, and then only for three hours a day, Balila, who is 53 and blind, sells water. She has had a hard life, bringing up two daughters on her own. Her story is typical of many Cape Verde women who live in a society where the men have to emigrate. This film takes us into a different world, which we see through the eyes of sensitively observed individuals.
Made in 1985 this film reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless. The film quality may not be to modern standards.
