Granada Television’s “World in Action” commissioned a nation-wide survey into rape inside marriage. A number of women describe frankly how distressing it is to be raped by their husbands, and how in many ways it is worse than if it had been a stranger. Most women in the survey thought that English law should be changed, as it has been in Scotland, to make rape within marriage a crime. The survey revealed that this sort of violence is surprisingly common, and the police feel unable to deal with it adequately while this legal position stands.
Made in 1989 this film reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless.
