The Greenham Challenge – Bringing Missiles to Trial

The unusual case “Greenham Women Against Cruise Missiles v. Ronald Reagan” was filmed by a group from England during the mid 1980’s that had been protesting the U. S. deployment of nuclear weapons at Greenham Common in Berkshire, England. This video gives a short history of the first use of nuclear weapons at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the buildup of nuclear weapons, and the development of the Cold War. After trying unsuccessfully to take their case to the British courts, the women from Greenham Common (GWACM) filed suit in the United States through the Center of Constitutional Rights in New York. Testimonies included 158 European and American organizations, as well from 30 experts in the field. Plaintiffs included two U. S. Congressmen, who argued that the deployment of cruise missiles violates international law and the separation of powers as mandated by the U. S. Constitution. Defending The U. S. government was Rudolph Giuliani, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District.. The initial case was decided against the plaintiffs and later appealed and finally dismissed. Among those who speak on behalf of the Greenham Common women were: Gwyn Kirk and Helen John (GWACM); Randall Forsberg (founder Nuclear Freeze Campaign); Michio Kaku (Nuclear Physics, CUNY); Gene R. LaRocque (Rear Admiral U. S. Navy, Retired); June Hickman (GWACM British legal counsel); and Anne Simon (Center for Constitutional Rights).

This program was produced by Linda and Peter Wiesner, with funding from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. It was aired on WHYY-TV 12 and distributed to universities in the United States.
