Great Expectations: The background to the social services. A survey from the very beginnings – before the 16th Century poor law – through the new legislation made during the last war up to more recently, including the unrealistic expectations of the people.

Care by Order: The role of the social workers in child care. We see a London family with a boy of nearly four and a girl of nearly three. The parents desperately want to keep the children, but cannot cope with them, and are constantly on the point of injuring them. The children are in and out of care.

The End of the Road: The role of social workers with old people. How much choice can be given to old people about where they can live? Social workers can support people in their own homes to a certain extent, but sometimes this is not enough.

A Kind of Living: The role of the social workers with disabilities. Adequate care for people with leaning difficulties is expensive, and more handicapped children live to be adults now than ever before. Even with day care the burden is very heavy on the family, as we can see in the case of 17 year old Andre, who has the mental age of a three month old baby.

Do It Yourself: The advantages and drawbacks of volunteers in social work. Volunteers can often help greatly but sometimes there is a clash of interest.

Cash or Care?: How valuable are social workers? What does society really need from them? Some people argue that the money would be better spent on providing better services for their clients. But it seems that for most people money is not the main problem, and social workers do provide a very necessary, if rather inadequate, service.
