Military spending continues to grow at an alarming rate and Britain’s defence spending as a proportion of total spending and compared with other countries is one of the highest. Higher military spending results in lower spending on social projects such as housing and overseas aid, Contrary to popular belief, military spending does not create jobs; the same government in any other area would create more jobs. Trade Unionists in a variety of companies with military products have been putting forward plans for arms conversion; useful products which their factories could make instead of weapons. So far none of these ideas have been taken up. In other countries there is government pressure to develop plans for alternatives to weapons manufacture, but in Britain the incentives go the other way. Still pictures.
