Description
This film written by a practising Speech and Language Therapist, shows the development of pre-linguistic skills through to the first words and sentences that happen in the first two years of life.
Several children are followed chronologically through the stages that form the basics of communication. Topics covered include:
- Early Interaction – the first cries and smiles of the newborn and the responses of the carer.
- The development of babble – with examples of sound combinations at different stages.
- Non-verbal communication and vocalisation.
- The first words – single and two word sentences.
This film will be suitable for all students of child development especially those interested in early language. It will help students to learn about the stages and, by clear examples of those stages, help them learn to assess a child’s progress. The film emphasises the importance of interaction in language development and also gives practical ideas of how to stimulate communication at the different stages.
