Free elections were held in Nicaragua in 1984 for the first time for 45 years. Seven politcal parties, from the extreme left to the Conservative Party participated. This film looks at the development of this democratic system from the point of view of the people: their hopes, beliefs and their culture. It focusses on two women members of the new National Assembly, one an ex-nun. the other the mother of a girl who, aged 15, murdered by Somoza’s National Guard.The personal lives of these two women and their relationship with the people whom they represent, are explored.
