Description

Made in 2004 by Pilger who sadly died recently this film gives a picture of the inhumanities suffered daily by the Arab population of the illegally occupied West Bank and Gaza. Their olive trees which are often their only source of income are chopped down by members of nearby settlements. Their land taken to use as new roads and checkponts as well as for the creation of nearly Arab villages. In despair young Palestinans becomes suicide bombers. The story is told of a young university student, also a volunteer ambulance worker who became a suicide bomber and a spokesman for the then prime minister tries to justify his actions.

Pilger returns to the Occupied Territories of the West Bank and Gaza, where he filmed a documentary with the same title in 1977. He believes the basic problems are unchanged: a desperate, destitute people whose homeland is illegally occupied by the world’s 19th-largest military power. The majority of the film is dedicated to interviewing Israelis, some of them settlers or advisers for the government, others Israelis who are critical towards the politics of their government. However, the film also takes time to speak with many Palestinians and goes into depth to explain to Western audiences why the Palestinians feel that they have to keep resisting the occupation of their territories and fight back against the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The films ends with John Pilger saying “if no justice there will be a reckoning”. Prophetic words!
