Description
An anthropological film in two parts, by George Milner. The first part (18 mins) was shot in 1955 and 1959 in Samoa, and shows traditional activities and preparations for the formal installation of the Matai, a title holder responsible for the welfare and good behaviour of his extended family.
The second part (47 mins) is a discussion between Rev Lalomilo Kamu of Birmingham University, an educated and articulate Samoan, and Dr Christina Toren, of the London School of Economics, of the main issues raised.
Made in 1989 this film reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless. The film quality may not be to modern standards.
