Description
An Australian film which examines the role of United States bases in Australia. Pine Gap and other bases serve a military function; intelligence gathering, submarine surveillance, satellite tracking and related actvities designed to give early warning of Soviet nuclear attack on the U.S. an American now serving a sentence for espionage claims that the C.I.A. carried out ‘a daily deceptions of the Australians’ and in the second half of the film claims that the Labour government of Gough Whitlam was ‘destabilized’ by the C.I.A. are examined. The bases still function and much of their activity remains cloaked insecrecy but enough is known to substantiate the claim that they must be primes targets in the event of hostilities between the United States and the Soviet Union. For Europeans, the lessons of U.S. involvement in the internal politics and security of their allies are clear and implications frightening.
