The 2nd Expedition – 23 + 22 Minutes (45)

Experiments with chimpanzees in the wild. Part 1 (colour). A hide is erected high in the trees. A group of 12 chimpanzees emerge from the rainforest. Some have infants on their backs or younger ones on their bellies. There is one adult male and the rest are adult females and older offspring. They are offered various fruit and vegetables, some of which they take, including eggs. They are presented with a live chick, a young monkey and a small doll. We see their reactions.

The 3rd Expedition – 17 + 29 Minutes (36)

The 3rd University of Amsterdam Chimpanzee Expedition, shows filming from a hide in the tree. The chimps are mostly given a lot of bananas, which they eat, and carry off into the forest. They are also given other fruit, which they don’t like as much. Some individuals will take eggs, but most investigate them and then reject them. They don’t seem interested in a baby goat. The stuffed leopard is introduced. It’s head moves. They are frightened of this, and intimidation displays, anxious behaviour such as a scratching themselves and breaking off branches follow. A large picture of a chimpanzee frightens them. One male is over 40 years old. Many of the females carrying offspring on their bellies or backs.

The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards but is useful for historical use.
