Description
About several women’s memories of markets, entertainment and their work. The recall the old Caledonian market closed down in 1939, a thriving Exmouth Market and the smells and sounds of Chapel Market. They take us to Islington Empire, Collin’s Music Hall, Sadler’s Wells and recall popular songs, queuing for hours, eating trotters, and enjoying a meal in Lyons Corner House. And their work – the limited choice fo women and hardships of unemployment.
This film reflects the cultural attitudes, social work procedures and language of the time it was made. The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. But the issues raised are timeless.
