Description

Common Interest is the series title for ten 25 minute programmes which focuses on individual experiences in development. Although each episode tells a different story they are grouped into three parts to expeller three different aspects as happened in 1983.

Episode 7: The Survival Game

This entire episode is devoted to the 5th form at Sheldon School studying problems of the poorer countries and their relationship with the rich world. The class divides into four groups each representing a category of country from the wealth to the poverty stricken. The Brandt report is taken as a basic tool in this interesting experiment. 25 minutes

Episode 8: Enough is Enough

Mainly a study of life in Coventry after the closure of many car companies. Poverty is relative. Unemployment and Child benefits are not enough. Between half to one third of Coventry’s population at this time was on a further state aid. But community activity and self-help was on the rise.25 minutes

Episode 9: Too Big, Too Rich, Too Powerful

Global Economic forces made decisions both good and bad which affect local communities. An example is Bathgate in Scotland which had two main employers. Almost at the same time Plessy closed down and BMC/British Leyland halved it’s workforce. The result 25% unemployed in the small town. Traumatic experiences for many. Reliance on exports makes for vulnerabilities to changes in work demands and international competition. 25 minutes

Episode 10: The Brandt Report

A discussion chaired by a youthful looking Jonathan Dimbley. A panel including the then Commonwealth Secretary General, Teresa Hayter author of ‘Creating World Poverty’, Sir Reay Geddes Internation Industrialist, listen to points put forward by various groups.

The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards but is useful for historical use.
