Nick Mazzoco was drafted into the US army and ordered to view 18 atomic explosions in the Nevada desert at very close range. He describes them as beautiful and horrible – the mushroom cloud itself, and seeing the skull and skeleton of the soldier next to him illuminated by the blinding flash, as in an x-ray. Includes some archive material of these tests. Nick talks of the confusion, mounting fear and anger as the enormity of his situation begins to dawn on him.
