Description

Mongane Wally Serote is a black South African poet who was born in Sophiatown, Johannesburg in 1944 and was educated in Lesotho, South Africa and USA. Now in exile, he is head of the cultural department of the African National Congress. In this interview he talks to Ralph Mzamo, himself is a South African and a former political prisoner, about the origins of his poetry in his experiences in South Africa, the call for international sanctions against apartheid, the reasons for cultural and sporting boycott and the future of cultural policy in South Africa after liberation. The interview is illustrated with historic photographis and film shot in South Africa. Wally Serote is an acclaimed poet and an articulate and incisive critic of Apatheid. This video is excellent teaching material and will raise awareness of South Africa and the struggles there.
