Infant care and development in rural Nepal.
A rare and important piece of infant development material, which documents in detail the development of a baby, born in winter to a subsistence farming family in rural Nepal. It shows the effects of an initially depressed mother at first not responding, and then beginning to respond to her infant. It raises important questions about the development and mental heath of this and so many other third world infants who grow up in similar conditions. It also questions whether regular observation could more often be applied as a treatment method in situations where there is maternal depression and/or rejection of infants.
