Description
Toying with Their Future takes a hard look at aspects of the toy industry. and at the impact that North America’s most popular toys have on our children. As the film shows. toys are big business. In 1988 alone 40 million Barbie dolls were sold worldwide. Hype and commercialism vie for the consumer dollar at the huge New York Toy Fair, where girls are encouraged to fantasize about life as their favorite doll, and boys are enticed by the latest in power figures and sophisticated weaponry.
Toy designers and other industry representatives appearing in this film assert that toys have nothing to do with education and values: they are merely “‘fun.” Vehemently disagreeing with this point of view are Marie Louise Gay. a writer and illustrator of children’s stories. and Vietnam veteran Dave Cline. Both pay eloquent tribute to the power of fantasy and toys to shape young minds, and call for toys that truly stimulate imagination and reflection. A discussion-starter for parents and educators, Toying with Their Future urges viewers to take a closer look at the toys we buy our children Toying with Their Future is based on the French-language production, L’Avenir en ieux.
