Description
The television programme reviews 1983 thinking about contraception. It also offers a fascinating historical perspective, showing that sponges soaked in lemon juice (a spermicidal) used by the Ancient Egyptians and looking at political history of birth control from Margaret Sanger and Marie Stopes to the post-war worldwide concern about population explosion. The pill offers the drug companies a higher return on their investment than the various barrier methods, yet increasing concern is expressed about its side effects. Germaine Greer explains why she feels that contraception is a feminist issue and the film concludes with some speculation about future developments in birth control.
