Description

FELIX GREENE
Born in England, Felix Greene first visited China for the BBC. He travelled extensively, often in remote areas to which no Westerner had been for over 20 years. He returned with what is the most complete professional film coverage of China that has been obtained by any Western film-maker.

SCHOOL FOR DEAF CHILDREN where acupuncture is used to help many of the children. In 1968 it was discovered that acupuncture partially restored hearing. Item length 14 minutes.

PEOPLES COMMUNES Tells in detail the structure of this system: village within a brigade within a commune and compares the 1972 life of the peasant with what it was in pre-communist times. Shows the collective effort, without mechanisation, to terrace the high hills to increase amount of arable land. Item length 23 minutes

EDUCATION For more than two years during the Cultural Revolution schools and colleges were closed; education came to a stop. Why did this happen? What was behind it? This film shows some of the educational ideas which pertained in schools and colleges in 1972. Right from starting in kindergarten children are taught self-reliance, and similarly in primary school. In senior school a small factory is incorporated where things like transistors are made. Item length 40 mins.

SELF-RELIANCE At that time the policy was that this vast country should become one great D.I.Y project. Every brigade had its mini foundry. This was a very wasteful process but it did educate the peasantry in industrial methods and perhaps that is the explanation for the rapid expansion of China to become a great industrial power within the last 20 years, a rate of expansion never seen before in any country. Item length 23 minutes
