Description

Two short films on one reel. The first film shows a family awaiting the arrival of a relative who has just been discharged from a mental hospital. The fears and anxieties of each member of the family are revealed in their relationships with each other and their expressed attitudes to the visitor, who arrives at the end of the film, leaving the audience to speculate on his reception. This film is useful to raise discussion, not only about mental health and provisions for patients, but also about the family and how they resolve such problems. In the second film the uncle, Michael, is fishing with Pete, the 15-year-old son of the family, and trying to re-establish their relationship in the face of Pete’s uncertainty. They meet a friend of Pete’s on the way home which causes him some embarrassment. He goes on ahead and meets some more friends whom he tells about Michael: ‘Sometimes he looks at you like you’re the one that’s mad – not him”. The film naturally raises a consideration of the questions “What is madness?” How is it classified?'” and also the problems facing patients when thev leave hospital to re-establish their life.
