Description

The most ambitious effort in this century to impose order on the lawless system of indsutrial nations came in San Francisco in June 1945 with the founding of the United nations. It was founded on the idea of “collective security” – if one member was attacked the other members would come to its aid – but the idea was doomed to failure because the major powers of the world all reserved the right to veto decisions. War has ceased to be a rational instrument of policy to settle disputes between the great powers. Dyer ends with the warning that we must find other solutions to our problems. We must find a way to say goodbye to war if the planet is to survive.
