For Your Own Good
DVD1991 52 Minutes
Memories of child abuse help adults come to terms with their sufferings.
Children who are victims of abuse are also victims of an enforced silence about their sufferings. Through interviews and dramatisation of specific memories from the point of view of the child, adults recall and regain an insight into their childhood,. The Hansel and Gretel story, illustrated by a series of beautiful collages, is also used as a metaphor showing misguided child rearing practices. Based on the work of Alice Miller. Dorothy Rowe gives her own insight.
Made in 1991 this film reflects the cultural attitudes, medical procedures and language of the time it was made. The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. But the issues raised are timeless.
