Description

Looks at the reasons which forces millions of poor Brazillians off the land to pile up in sprawling shanty-towns in the coastal cities where there is high unemployment, inadequate housing, schooling, medical facilities and where food is expensive. Made by a Brazillian film team led by well-known film-maker Guido Araujo, the film visits coffee plantations in north-east Brazil where machines are taking over from men, peasant farmers who are under threat of expulsion from their smallholdings, and an encampment of landless labourer (boias-frias) during the harvest. It looks at how some people, with the backing of the churches, are organisng themselves to struggle against the injustices of a repressive economic system.

The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards but is useful for historical use.
