Part of Living in Styal, about a prison for women. Three new prisoners are admitted: Christine, 32, who has caused a breach of the peace, Jenny, 28, who has been shoplifting, and leaves behind five children including a baby in intensive care, and Barbara, 22, convicted of arson, burglary, criminal damage and assault. They are assessed by the Assistant Governor, and we also see Penny, who has slashed her arm, and the prison punishment block, ‘Bleak House’.
This film is of historical interest and reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time it was made. But the issues raised are timeless.
