The Ribbon – 1987

A 1987 film looking at Apartheid South Africa, Black and white mothers in South Africa are making their voices heard in their way for a just resolution to the escalating conflict.

Description

Black and white mothers in South Africa are making their voices heard in their way for a just resolution to the escalating conflict. White mothers, concerned that their children are being conscripted to defend apartheid, started meeting with black mothers whose children are becoming the brunt of state repression. Wanting to act, they decided to make a Peace Ribbon, painting or sewing their visions of peace into a banner over 500m long, which was used on many occasions in spite of the state of the emergency. An inspiring film which shows both futility and hope, following the women through their fear and struggle.
