Description

Britain was importing uranium, or yellow cake, from Namibia. This was forbidden by the UN (in the 1980’s) and also appeared to support the illegal occupation of Namibia by South Africa. Tony Benn claimed that during his time as Britain’s energy minister, a contract with Rio Tino Zinc was switched without his approval from a source of supply in Canada to a mine in Namibia. RTZ denies this, saying that it had always been a Namibian mine.
