Description
Looks at how and why New Zealand has taken a world-recognised stand against allowing nuclear warships into its ports. First, a brief look at the South Pacific region shows widespread nuclear testing – and anti-nuclear protesting – over the past several decades. News footage from the 70’s and early 80’s helps establish the New Zealand peace movement’s role in the 1984 election of an anti-nuclear Labour government headed by David Lange. The film also examines the anti-nuclear links with other South Pacific countries through the Maori and Pacific Islanders living in New Zealand. The all-white South African Rugby tour and the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior are also mentioned. In 1987 New Zealand’s parliament passed a law banning nuclear vessels from the country’s ports. Later that year the anti-nuclear government was re-elected.
