GINGERBREAD is an organisation set up by people trying to bring up children on their own. One in five of these are men, and this film tries to show what it’s like for a man on his own with a family of five children. He has to do all the chores, and give them the love and care they need. Could raise many points for discussion, such as the roles of men and women in the family and the inequalities – for instance, it was not then possible for the deserted husband to claim maintenance from his wife for the children.
Made in 1973 this film reflects the cultural attitudes of the country and language of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless. The film quality may not be to modern standards.
