Faced with threats of redundancy, the workers at Lucas Aerospace have themselves drawn up plans for producing worthwhile equipment such as kidney machines and non-polluting vehicles and accessories instead of weapons which are a major output of the firm at present. This plan was worked out in detail, and the shop stewards who were responsible for it claim that the firm as well as the workers, and indeed society in general, would benefit from it, but the management were hostile to the idea.
