1. The Armed Robber
Documents the experience of John who at 37 has spent 15 of his last 20 years in prison for violent crimes. His angry and mistrustful view of life has been coloured by childhood experiences of violence at home and in care, and his future looks bleak without work and with his 17 year old girlfriend pregnant.
2. Young Offenders
Inside a Young Offender Institution near Hull. Two prison officers are trying to help a group of young men sentenced for violent crimes prepare for their release. They discuss their lives and plans, and reveal the painful emotions hidden behind their tough exteriors.
3. The Victims
A young man beaten up at a disco, an ex-offender who becomes victim of a revenge attack, a bus driver assaulted by a passenger and a young mother terrorised by her husband are among those who describe their reactions to violence and the effect it had on their lives. Violence is often closer to home than newspaper headlines would suggest.
4. On Probation
Follows the lives of a man and a woman who have been in prison for violent crimes. With their probation officers, they confront problems which include alcohol and unemployment. This disturbing portrayal of complexity and unhappiness suggests that not enough resources are available to address the underlying chaos of their violent lives.
