Description

This programme is to familiarise students with the concepts and basic techniques of microbiology safety. It would probably be used in association with lectures and safety literature. Good bench technique is the foundation of microbiological safety, the basic methods being the correct use of innoculation loop and the use of pipettes. Aerosols may be released by the uncontrolled agitatuib of cultures and lead to contamination dectectable by sampling. Incorrect loading and use of centrifuges may also lead to contamination. Containment level 3 involves special techniques and the use of class I safety cabinets. The most hazardous organisms involve class III cabinets at Containment Level 4. The infected material from all laboratories must be made safe before disposal, usually by autoclaving. Other general hazards include fire and the misuse of gas cylinders.
