A documentary film which attempts to show how and why control of the birth process has changed hands through history, from a home-based activity integrated into everyday life, to a highly mechanised event. What improvements can be made in the maternity services, and what alternative ways are there for giving borth so that it can be more satisfactory for all concerned – parents, barbies and birth attendants? The film includes footage of the 1982 Birthrights Rally, where thousands of women expressed a desire to have more say in the way they give birth, and a community midwife discusses the issues surroundng birth both at home and in hospital.
