Description
This review of the arms race was made for the UN special session on disarmament in 1978. It traces the history of the arms race back to 1945, the year that witnessed the birth of the UN and the dropping of the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It looks at the attempts to control the use of atomic energy for peaceful ends and at proliferation that has occurred despite these efforts, stressing the potential hazard created by the waste from nuclear power stations. Kurt Waldheim makes a plea for the need to base international security on nuclear disarmament and the extinction of the species and that while the world continues to spend millions on the arms we will not see a new international economic order.
