Description

A film made for 8-13-year old children concerning the way we exploit animals in so many different areas of society and, more particularly, how most of us take such exploitation totally for granted. It shows how many of our daily activities are inseparable from animal suffering — the food we eat, the household products we use, the cosmetics we wear and even some of our entertainment’s.

Although the film does show scenes of cruelty, the material has been selected to ensure that it does not frighten children of this age group. The aim is to raise questions about some of the practices which most of them would otherwise remain ignorant about, and, in addition, to impress upon young people that our attitude to animals is a subject worthy of serious concern.

Made in 1984 this film reflects the cultural attitudes of the country and language of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless. Teachers can point out that since this film was made progress has been made. Sales of free range eggs and meat from animals raised naturally has grown considerably. Use of performing animals in circuses in Britain is now much restricted but not forbidden completely. But much still needs to be done particularly in the fields of testing of cosmetics on animals.
