The notion that AIDS originated in Africa seems to have taken hold – with racist consequences – even though there is no hard science to support this. The suspicion is that the ‘Africa thesis’ was advanced to divert attention from a more dreadful scenario, namely that AIDS was a disease constructed by military research. As long ago as 1969 a Pentagon blueprint for a new biological weapon looked forward to ‘an ineffective micro-organism which might be refractory to the immunologcal and therapeutic processes that defend against infectious diseases’.
