Living on the Edge tells the stories of a number of drug users and ex-users filmed over a three year period. These personal insights show the range of feelings and experiences of many drug users in gaining trust, respect and services from doctors, carers and drug and HIV agencies. It also reveals how gaps in understanding between AIDS agencies and drug agencies can lead to frustration and bewilderment.Issues explored include: ‘Looking at values and attitudes’, ‘Developing skills’ and ‘Developing services’. ‘Living on the Edge’ is 38 mins long and divides into two main parts.Pt 1 covers issues specific to HIV drug users including‘Should we trust drug users?’‘Isolated users’,‘The role of G.P.’s’, ‘Negotiating Methadone’.Part 2 shows examples of support and the interaction between users and support agencies‘The Landmark’,‘Positively Women’,‘Mainliners’,‘ Outreach work and needle exchange’, Community care’,‘ Hospital care’, ‘The family and children’, Partners’.Made in 1991 this film reflects the cultural attitudes, medical procedures and language of the time it was made. The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. But the issues raised are timeless.
