Last Supper in Hortsley Street

This 1983 film based in Cape Town, South Africa is about one of the last black families to be forcibly moved and relocated from an established community at the heart of the city.

Description

In February 1966, in Cape Town, the oldest and most established black residential area in the heart of the city itself was proclaimed ‘white’. This meant the removal of 40,000 people and almost almost every house in the district. This film is about one of the last families to move, Moslems with four young children. It shows how they are moved by the authorities miles away, where there are few amenities with more crime. They reflect on their fear of the future and sense of dislocation, which was shared by thousands of residents when the long established community was broken up and their sadness and anger at a political system that can treat human beings in the way.
