Description
Robben Island is one of South Africa’s maximum security prisons for black South Africans. In a comeplling conversation, three ex-inmates, (a lawyer, an educationalist and a credit-union workers, all imprisoned for political crimes) discuss and analyse their experiences on Robben Island. They meet for the first time in eleven years. They recall why its racist nature makes Robben Island Unique, and the strength of the communal solidarity built up in the struggle for personal survival in the ‘special section’, which also uncludes such men as Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisula: they remember the education system they devised and what they taught the white warders and discuss why the non-violent struggle changed to an armed one, and what Robben Island symbolises for South Africa today.
