Description
What do we mean when we say “mentally handicapped”? Historically, people with learning disabilities have been seen as demons, ogres, monsters or helpless objects of pity. The programme asks if any of these attitudes continue to colour our perceptions today. It looks at the manufacturers of images of learning disability from the advertising of a charity with a brief to raise money, to the portrayal on television of people with learning disabilities. Since many TV programmes speak on behalf of the people being represented we aimed to allow people to speak for themselves: “… if we were on programmes, then people would get the right ideas about us and not call us names…”
Made in 1986 this film reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless. The film quality may not be to modern standards.
