Description
One person in eleven is aged 75 or over – a fact that throws fresh stresses on an already overstretched National Health Service. How will Britain cope ? The film-makers visit Worthing, a community that already has a one-in-eleven proportion of 75 year olds. They find both problems and an encouraging degree of optimism. Optimism because the ‘young’ old are helping the ‘old’ old face disability and loneliness through thriving voluntary schemes.
Problems in that Worthing, even with its high proportion of the elderly, does not have its own psycho-geriatric hospital, a fact which highlights the growth of Alzheimer’s Disease, sometimes called premature senility.
