Description

Jo, whose parents are orthodox Sikhs, but who herself was born and educated in Britain, is now a single working woman, living in her own flat. As she spends her evening at home, we hear her thoughts as she is caught between two cultures. Made on a low budget by members of the Asian community in Britain, it has been very well reviewed, and should provide insights into the dilemmas that many people face.

Additional description February 2011. Because we have received a very critical comment we have felt it right to reproduce it here.

Negative Comments.1.This ‘reconstruction’ is shot entirely inside a house, following a heavily made-up young woman around her kitchen, with an actress’s voiceover, (as she has a bath and looks at her painted nails). It seems to have no real message. 2. It cannot provide an adequate reference point for university students today because it is too out of date and the main character smokes continually throughout the film. Yes – because it is ethnically sound, No – because she smokes continually.) 3. It is not a documentary despite the write up it gets on your site. I highly recommend that you withdraw it or at least re-write the misleading description. This was from a college lecturer. Now the comments from an Indian librarian who works in Adult Community Services after she had both read the above criticism and viewed the film. “The movie is not too bad but lacks any clear message and drive to a conclusion (if viewers are expecting any). Being caught up in a traditional upbringing, family and its clash with modern day societal demands is quite obvious for a rich and suavely Sikh culture and it may well be good to portray imbibing the best of both leading to happy families. As it is the film portrays the struggle of many who are of Asian origin and born and brought up in this country. I personally think that it will be a good resource for university students or those who want to know about the hidden struggle of the Asian young generation.
