Description

‘World In Action’ investigation into cancer diagnosis, which claims that people with cancer are dying unnecessarily because of lack of GP training in detecting the symptoms. Eight of the nine years of a doctor’s training is spent in a hospital, not in general practice, yet half of all doctors become GPs. This claim is supported by people with cancer who have been diagnosed later than they should have been.

Although the system is excellent, our G.P. training is not. This programme looks at three patient experiences of presenting their symptoms to their G.P. Their symptoms were not recognised by the G.P. and therefore not referred for further investigation in secondary care. Each person eventually received a late diagnosis of cancer.

Reviewer’s comment; Satisfactorily highlights the need for better G.P. training. Illustrates the need for G.P.s to listen more carefully to patients during consultations. At the time this programme was made G.P.s had no continuing professional development. Recommended for G.P. training and patient groups.

Target Audiences; G.P.s, Service Improvement Leads in primary care and clinical commisioning groups, Patient groups.

N.B. This programme was made 22 years ago ( as at 2015) and training will have changed.
