Description

This film chronicles the first year of baby Tim (9 weeks premature) and his parents, and examines methods of treatment in the light of babies’ and parents’ emotional well-being. It demonstrates that, whilst the high level of technology in today’s Special Care Baby Units gives even very tiny and very premature babies a chance of life, the procedures used can be intrusive and traumatic. It shows new, gentler methods of treatment and underlines constantly changing attitudes towards special baby care.

This film is of historical interest and reflects the cultural attitudes, medical procedures and language of the time it was made. The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. But the issues raised are timeless.
