Behind the Drool - a Portrait of Simon Stevens
DVD1997 17 Minutes
A candid documentary about a young man with cerebral palsy.
This is what Simon himself says about the film: "From bibs and nappies to religion and sexuality, this documentary covers issues most people painfully avoid discussing. Giving an insight into the lifestyle of someone with cerebral palsy, prepare for something beyond the stereotypes as I take you behind my drool.... Like all portraits, it only shows a slice of my life, but I was given the chance to reveal some of my real self - which is somewhat brutal in its truth.
Sit up and enjoy this journey through my world. The ride may be bumpy and there will probably be a few shocks on the way, but you will come back with an awareness of a world which is not as dissimilar to your own as you may have thought!"
This film is of historical interest and reflects the cultural attitudes, medical procedures and language of the time it was made. But the issues raised may be timeless.
